QOTW - My child had a vision screening at school. Does he still need an eye examination?
Aug 6, 2008
Vision screening programs help identify children with eye or vision problems that threaten sight or impair their ability to develop and learn normally. However, vision screenings have limitations. It cannot be used to diagnose an eye or vision problem, but rather indicate a potential need for further evaluation.
Many vision screenings test for visual acuity only. A child may be able to see letters 20 feet away, but that does not indicate whether his eyes are able to work together to read materials 12 inches away, or if there is an eye health problem or vision perception problem.
Vision screenings can give a parent a false sense of security. When the report indicates a child is seeing 20/20, parents often assume that no further testing is needed.
QOTW - Does an eye exam only test for vision?
July 21, 2008
Periodic eye and vision examinations are an important part of preventive health care. Many eye and vision problems have no obvious signs or symptoms. As a result, individuals are often unaware that problems exist.
Early diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems are important for maintaining good vision and eye health, and when possible, preventing vision loss.
In addition, the eye examination can determine if there are any underlying health conditions that can affect a patient’s eyes and overall health. For example, during the dilated retinal examination, the optometrist may detect leaky blood vessels due to diabetes. This condition may or may not affect a patient’s vision now, but if the diabetes remains untreated, vision loss may result. This is also an indication that the diabetes may not be adequately controlled. In this case, the optometrist will notify the patient’s primary care physician so that the diabetes can be properly treated, preventing further vision loss and other health consequences that result from diabetes.
QOTW - Why is it important to wear sunglasses?
July 9, 2008
The main reasons for wearing sunglasses are to protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation and blue light, enhance eye comfort, and to make it easier for your eyes to adjust from being outdoors to indoors.
The sun's UV radiation can cause cataracts, benign growths on the eye's surface, cancer of the eyelids and skin around the eyes, and photokeratitis, sometimes
called snow blindness, which is a temporary but painful sunburn of the eye's surface.
While wide-brimmed hats and caps can block about 50% of UV radiation from the eyes, sunglasses offer the best eye protection.
Long-term exposure to the blue and violet portion of the solar spectrum is a risk factor for macular degeneration, especially for patients who are “sun sensitive.” The sun's brightness and glare interfere with comfortable vision and the ability to see clearly by causing squinting and watering of the eyes.
Spending just two or three hours in bright sunlight can hamper the eyes' ability to adapt quickly to nighttime or indoor light levels. This can make driving at night after spending a day in the sun more hazardous.
